Georgetown University's Office of Communications, a division of the Office of Public Affairs, represents and promotes the University and its faculty, students, programs and policies to a variety of internal and external constituents. The office provides strategic communications consultation, media relations efforts and event planning services on behalf of Georgetown University, its faculty, administrators, academic programs and staff and coordinates activities to promote Georgetown officials and expertise to internal and external constituencies, including the news media.
The Office of Communications' professional staff stands ready to assist and advise all members of the University community. Below please find some of the services we provide and ways we can be of assistance:
Media and Public Relations
  • Faculty Experts Guide: Our office maintains an online guide of Georgetown University experts in a variety of fields for reporters and external audiences looking for comment on issues in the news. Our office proactively reaches out to news media to ensure their familiarity with University experts and resources. Georgetown faculty experts are frequently quoted in major news outlets, asked to testify before Congress, and invited to speak at public forums and conferences worldwide.

  • Georgetown News Online: Our Web site provides online information about our campus events and activities, summaries of news items and more. You can also find here University photos and fact sheets, press releases and audio and video clips of events and expert faculty comment. We maintain this site to allow reporters and external constituents to access ongoing news and information about Georgetown.

  • Issues Management: We coordinate communications strategy for University and Main Campus issues, major announcements, new and emerging issues, campus controversies, and rapid-response situations. In doing so, we work collaboratively to identify issues that may become prominent to the University community and general public and develop strategies to proactively manage them. We also regularly work with colleagues to develop effective ways to communicate news and information about issues impacting the daily lives of students, staff, and coworkers within the University community.

  • Publicity: We draft press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, op-eds and other materials to publicize news from faculty research and/or the university. We promote stories to reporters and distribute information to news organizations in Washington, DC and throughout the world. National and international television networks, including C-Span, CNN, BBC and major print and electronic media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press and The Chronicle of Higher Education frequently cover research and events at Georgetown and look to the University's community of scholars for expert opinion.

Georgetown University's faculty experts are available for interviews by national and international media over our high-quality ISDN connection.

In order to recognize students for their hard work and dedication, we distribute press releases to their hometown newspapers. Many newspapers will print the stories as part of their coverage of news about local residents.

  • Media Training: Please contact us if you would like assistance in preparing for media interviews or training on what to do when the media calls.
Event Planning
  • The Office of Protocol and Events is responsible for coordinating events involving dignitaries visiting campus, including heads of state, elected officials, cabinet members, international leaders, celebrities and other public officials. Events of this magnitude often require specific protocol and security arrangements involving the University and other entities. The office also administers various information booths and services on the Main Campus. Call us to consult with you on logistics, program, publicity, webcasting capabilities and media coverage for your events and conferences.
